Lex Luthor's henchwoman, Mercy Graves, is a character created for the show. She was eventually added as a member of the cast in the comics. The same goes for the villainess Livewire.

Originally produce Bruce Timm was going to style this series after Max Fleisher's Superman (1941). The reason why they didn't make it Fleischer-esque is that Timm didn't want anybody to literally put it side-by-side with the old Fleischer shorts and say, 'They're just doing a third-rate knockoff of the Fleischers,'.

Q
Where is Metropolis located?
A
Superman's Metropolis is a fictional U.S. port city located on the north-eastern Atlantic coast. In the DC Comics Universe, Metropolis is considered to be located in New York State (which is said to be geographically larger in the DC Comics universe than it is in our own). It was originally a stand-in for New York City, but has since acquired a character all its own. Some sources had previously placed Metropolis in the state of Delaware across from Gotham City on the shore of Delaware Bay; however, this has been superceded by more recent continuity. Using the Smallville TV show. Smallville is located in Kansas, and Metropolis is about a 2 hours or so drive from there, which would put that Metropolis in Kansas (as maybe a stand in for Kansas City) since it not stated in the show that Metropolis is located out-of -state.
Q
Is Lex Luthor black in this series?
A
No. The creators have stated they modeled Luthor on Telly Savalas. The late Mr. Savalas, due to his Greek ancestry, had darker skin than the typical white person.
Q
Where is Smallville located?
A
Smallville is the fictional U.S. town where the baby Kal-El was found and raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent. The movie Superman (1978) located Smallville in the state of Kansas. This tradition has carried through into subsequent Superman comic-book stories, animation and television series. Earlier comics stories placed Smallville in the north-eastern United States, somewhere near the eastern seaboard. Some comics-related sources in the 1970s and '80s placed Smallville in the state of Maryland. Using the TV show Smallville, the town is once again located in Kansas.
