QHow did Abby survive the virus even though she caught it?
AAs with real viruses, immune-people often have to catch the virus and allow their body to fight it off while not being affected by it later. This would often involve you undergoing the milder symptoms (in this case near-death) while your body gets rid of the virus. Abby obviously caught the virus, probably while within the packed bus, and she received most of the symptoms (feeling faint, general sickness, symptoms of most flus) but her body was strong enough to stop it without dying. This may have also occurred with the other survivors, but they may just have been asleep during fighting of the virus as weren't aware of ever catching it.
QHow many people survived the virus?
AThe team who were in charge of the virus crisis estimated that 90% of the population would die, but it was later obvious that it was something more like 99.??% if not more, meaning there would be less than 1 survivor for every 1000 dead if not for every 10000 dead. These people are all naturally immune to the virus, like many people in real life are immune to less serious viruses. There would also be isolated people that the virus would not reach, such as people living in the Antarctica, sealed-in groups (like in the third episode) and sailors including the navy. The navy would have heard about the dangerous virus and would be able to stay away from land for a long while, with probably enough time to come up with a plan.
