QWhat are the differences between the R-Rated and Unrated Version?
AThe R-Rated Version lacks almost any violent scene and is approx. 80 seconds shorter than the Unrated Version. A detailed comparison between both versions with pictures can be found here.
QWhat happened at the beginning? Was that Jessica Harper's character who was stabbed to death and hanged?
ANo, it was another character, Pat Hingle. The frantic editing of "Suspiria" sometimes confuses viewers in regard to the opening murder. We see Susy Banyon (Jessica Harper) arrive at the airport and take a taxi to the Tanz Akademie. Before she can enter, she sees Pat Hingle (Eva Axen) flee the school in a panic. Susy is denied entrance and gets back into the taxi, where she sees Pat again, this time running through the trees just outside the school. At this point, we lose track of Jessica Harper's character and are witness to Pat's murder, which occurs after she takes refuge in a friend's apartment "in town".The sudden shift in the narrative is jarring, and since Susy Banyon and Pat Hingle are both soaking wet because of the torrential rain, first time viewers often think it is Jessica Harper being murdered in the first sequence. This makes her reappearance in the next scene very confusing. Just pay attention to the dialog in the next scene and it should clear things up.
