Trivia
A few characters have alliterative names: Nick Naylor, Heather Holloway, Bobby Jay Bliss, and Lorne Lutch (aka Marlboro Man). This is similar to the naming customs for certain comic book heroes, particularly the Marvel gang (Peter Parker, Bruce Banner, Reed Richards, etc.), which is a noteworthy coincidence because many of this movie's actors have been in comic book based movies. Katie Holmes was in Batman Begins (2005), Aaron Eckhart was in that movie's sequel The Dark Knight (2008), J.K. Simmons was in three Spider-Man movies, Maria Bello was in A History of Violence (2005), William H. Macy was in Mystery Men (1999) and provided a voice in the cartoon Superman: Where There's Smoke (1998) (which as a further coincidence, has a title similar to this movie), Sam Elliott was in Hulk (2003) and Ghost Rider (2007), Cameron Bright was in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), and Melora Hardin was in The Rocketeer (1991).

When Nick's ex-wife and son visit Nick after the Heather Holloway article, he first talks to his wife from behind his closed door. At this time he has stubble on his face from not shaving. When he answers the door - and for the rest of the scene - he is clean-shaved.

Quotes
Joan Lunden: Robin Williger. He is a 15 year old freshman from Racine, Wisconsin. He enjoys studying history; he's on the debate team. Robin's future looked very, very bright. But recently he was diagnosed with cancer, a very tough kind of cancer. Robin tells me he has quit smoking, though, and he no longer thinks that cigarettes are "cool."

Nick Naylor: Few people on this planet knows what it is to be truly despised. Can you blame them? I earn a living fronting an organization that kills 1200 people a day. Twelve hundred people. We're talking two jumbo jet plane loads of men, women and children. I mean, there's Attila, Genghis... and me, Nick Naylor. The face of cigarettes, the Colonel Sanders of nicotine.

Heather Holloway: This is Nick Naylor telling you kids, don't do drugs, smoke cigarettes

Q
Did the real Marlboro Man die of cancer?
A
The "Marlboro Man" was first introduced in advertising in 1954, and is still seen in some parts of the world, though not the United States. Numerous models have portrayed the cowboy. Three - Wayne McLaren, David McLean and Dick Hammer, are known to have died from cancer. Sam Elliott's character is based on McLaren, who contracted lung cancer in the early 90's and testified in favor of anti-smoking legislation. The Phillip Morris company tried to deny he had appeared in the ads, then admitted he had. McLaren died a year later.A fourth "Marlboro Man" model, Erik Lawson, died of respiratory failure due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, in 2014, at the age of 72.
