Trivia
Tom Hanks's emotional acceptance speech became the inspiration for the film In & Out (1997), in which an actor wins an Academy Award and thanks his gay former teacher in his acceptance speech.

Originally, Macaulay Culkin was scheduled to give the award for Best Visual Effects. The plan was, after Culkin announced the nominees, he would say, "Could I have the envelope please?" A giant, roaring, animatronic T-Rex (from Jurassic Park (1993)) would then suddenly appear onstage, with the envelope naming the winners. After taking the envelope from the T-Rex's mouth, Culkin would return to the podium and say, "Thanks, Dad." Macaulay's father, Christopher Culkin, was offended by the line and demanded that it be cut from the show. When the Oscar producers refused, Christopher Culkin pulled his son from the show, and Elijah Wood gave the award instead.

Quotes
Himself - Winner: Best Original Score: Thank you all so very much. I want to thank for his friendship and support, Ken Wannberg. And for their great artistry, Itzhak Perlman and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. And for a man who always makes work fun and is a seeming, unending source of inspiration, Steven Spielberg. Thank you.

Fernando Trueba: I'd like to thank God, but I don't believe in God, I just believe in Billy Wilder... so thank you, Mr Wilder.

Himself - Performer: Streets of Philadelphia & Winner: Best Original Song: Thank you. Gee, this is the first song I ever wrote for a motion picture, so I guess it's all downhill from here. Neil Young, I gotta share this with you. You do your best work and you hope that it pulls out the best in your audience and some piece of it spills over into the real world and into people's everyday lives, and it takes the edge off of fear and allows us to recognize each other through our veil of differences. I always thought that was one of the things popular art was supposed to be about, along with the merchandising and all the other stuff. But I just want to say thank you, Jonathan, for having me as a part of your picture. I'm glad my song has contributed to its ideas and its acceptance. Love you, Pats. And thank you all for inviting me to your party.
