Kelly McGillis was offered the role of Sarah Tobias, but having survived a violent sexual assault in 1982 by two men who broke into her apartment, she declined the role and instead fought for the part of Kathryn Murphy.
Debra Winger turned down the role of Sarah. Heather Locklear tried to audition for the role, and Ally Sheedy was considered to play Sarah, but she backed out.
When Sarah, after the rape, goes back to The Mill, her red car is first shown dry and shiny and without a rear license plate. A few seconds later, in a close-up shot, we see the same car is wet from rain drops and with the license plate 'SXY SADI' on the back.
In both scenes when characters are playing the pinball machine we can hear the ball rolling around, scoring points and making the usual pinball machine noises but the score on the machine never changes.
When man is playing the pin-ball machine in the bar his score reads 196,100, but a few seconds later, after a reaction shot of Kathryn, the score is only 14,050.
Kathryn Murphy: This is what the jury is going to see. And they are going to see the girl too and you can't tell it from these. But she's tiny. She's the most defenceless looking thing you you ever saw.
