Bruce Campbell did a standing back flip during his audition. His reasoning was that because the show would be very action-packed, he wanted to impress the producers with his ability and willingness to handle himself physically.

In the Special Features DVD, writer Carlton Cuse said that when coming up with ideas for the series, he was studying various B-movies from the 50s and 60s, and noticed that many of them were Westerns or Sci-Fis. Cuse then decided to create the series as a combination of the two, creating it as a Western, but with sci-fi elements.

Although Lord Bowler has many aliases, it is implied that his real name is James Longfeather, this was first revealed in The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.: Hard Rock (1994).

The show presents an idealized "should-have-been" version of the 1890s. One of the most obvious differences from the reality is that Lord Bowler, a proudly independent and defiant black man, never experiences any racism from whites who would have called him "uppity."

Brisco's Chinese friends often talk to him about "fortune cookies." These confections were called fortune tea cakes before the 1940s and were not connected with California's Chinese culture until that same time period.

Lord Bowler often talks of having been in the Cavalry (an army that rode on horses), but he usually mispronounces it "Calvary" (the hill of Crucifixions).

Lord Bowler: Uh oh. You hit the sheriff

Brisco County Jr.: If I was gonna kill you, I'd be stepping over your body right now on my way out the door.
