Bob Dolman got the idea for the film from a line of Jim Morrison's poem "Stoned Immaculate" ("One summer night, going to the pier I ran into two young girls. The blonde was called Freedom, the dark one Enterprise"), which he'd heard while rewriting the script to The Doors (1991).

During the "Rock Cock" sequence, the girls were shown Polaroids of the crew who had volunteered to be photographed especially for that sequence. The surprise on Susan Sarandon's face is quite genuine when she saw who the photographs were of and recognized the faces.

Susan Sarandon and Eva Amurri Martino are mother and daughter, and this is their fourth film together. Amurri can also be seen as the younger version of Lavinia in Suzette's photo collection.

During the "Family Dinner", a bottle of red wine is prominently displayed on the table. The table is viewed from several angles and it is clear that this is the only such bottle there. Lavinia suddenly rises and walks away but then returns to grab the bottle and this time leaves with bottle in hand (and mouth). The camera returns to the table where the bottle is once again prominently displayed.

When Vinnie comes to take Ginger to the driving test, Suzette's bra strap is alternately out/in between shots.

At the end of the movie, when Suzette and Harry are driving away, Suzette puts her glasses on. In the next shot, they are off again.

Hannah: Mom caught me and Jules in the pool together.

Lavinia: I said we went to college together.

Hannah: [graduation speech] I hate feeling fake more than anything in the world. You wouldn't believe what people tell you; "you've gotta get into college, you've gotta figure out what you wanna do, you've gotta make money" and we're going... my God, I feel like I'm still a kid practically, but your teachers and your parents and everybody's got everything planned out for you with high expectations. But what if it has nothing to do with you? You lose track of yourself, and that's fake! We're going into the future and I only have little clues as to what might be out there... sometimes I'm scared to death, and sometimes I'm really excited, and I just wish that for everybody in my class... no for everybody, that whatever you do, you do it true, even if you mess up... even if you fail. I'd rather fail doing my own thing, doing what I wanna do than doing that doing what someone else wants me to do and succeeding. I'd rather be fighting with my family than pretending it's all okay. To the graduating class of 2002, GO! Go into the world and do it true. Do it true!
