Trivia
While a guest in 2010 on the "WTF with Mark Maron" podcast, Robin Williams said that it was being isolated and cold on the Alaska set of this movie that contributed to his return to drinking after 20 years of sobriety.

To prepare for the role as a woman with Tourette's syndrome, Holly Hunter traveled to the small town of Wolfville, Nova Scotia in Canada to meet with Dr. B. Duncan McKinlay, a Psychologist with Tourette's syndrome presenting for two days in the area. Ms Hunter sat through both days of Dr. McKinlay's presentation, disguising herself in a hat and dark glasses so that the many local parents and educators she was sitting amongst would not realize they were in fact sharing the room with an Academy Award winning actress.

According to the director's audio commentary on the DVD, financiers wanted Meg Ryan to play Holly Hunter's role. She flirted with the idea for about a year, before eventually dropping it.

Goofs
After the insurance investigators are done viewing Ted's video (which exposes the man loading the snowmobile as a fraud), the camera then pans over to Ted at his desk. Before it can pull in to a closer shot the boom mic (and part of the boom itself) is visible at the top of the frame.

When Paul Barnell discovers the body in the dumpster he says, "911" and proceeds to dial three digits and you hear ringing. The tones the buttons make on the cell phone as the digits are pressed are actually "123".

When Raymond Barnell is kneeling at the end, his gun moves different distances from him in different cuts (not including when it is kicked away).
