In the DVD commentary, Ron Perlman said out of everything he'd done in his acting career, the scene where his character attacks Miette under the influence of the Octopus sisters was what he hated most.
When stealing the safe, Miette and the other thieves use an unnecessarily complicated method to retrieve the apartment key. As the magnet easily fit underneath the door, they could have attained the key by attaching the magnet to a stick or a piece of string and retrieving it themselves, thus obviating the use of the cheese, mouse, and cat. This is, in fact, the joke of the scene and was used intentionally for the sake of originality and entertainment value.
The words from The Original that Miette remembers in flashback (after she receives Uncle Irvin's dream message) differ slightly from what The Original actually said, although the point of the message is still the same.
L'oncle Irvin: [after Krank's latest failiure]
Who stole the child's dreams? Krank, in his evil schemes. But the happy tale had a sting in it's tail. The genius has a fit of pique, hear the genius shriek, the 'genius' is up a creek.
Why do One and Miette need the map through the minefield if they easily avoid the mines with a rowboat?
A
While the map shows the way to safely navigate through the minefield, it also reveals the secret location of Crank's Laboratory. It is for this latter use that One and Miette need the map. This is revealed (albeit equivocally) in the conversation between The Original (credited as "The Diver") and Miette:The Original: "The Children!"Miette: "What about them? What do you know?"The Original: "He takes them. The Devil takes them away. In his boat.... he takes them to Hell"Miette: "What Hell?"The Original: "The tattooed man: he knows where. The map...the map of the minefield is tattooed on his body"Miette later remembers this latter quote in flashback after receiving Uncle Irvin's "Dream" message.
