Mickey Rourke said he did this film as a favor to Sylvester Stallone, who years earlier, when Rourke was in a career slump, offered him a major role in Get Carter (2000) and helped to pay part of Rourke's salary himself.

Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren have a fight scene in an abandoned warehouse. Li previously had a fight scene in a similar setting in Born to Defense (1986) with Kurt Roland Petersson, a fellow Swedish Karate teammate and personal friend of Lundgren.

Goofs
During the the first ambush on the cargo ship the Expendables' targeting lasers are clearly CGI where the red laser produces a very visible spot of light on the skin.

During the final battle just after the tower nearly collapses on Hale Caeser and before Barney Ross destroys the helicopter, Munroe is running with Sandra. As the shot of them running pans along, you briefly catch a partial glimpse of someone wearing Bermuda shorts and holding what appears to be a camcorder.

The silver badge on General Garza's right breast is actually a United States Army Combat Action Badge. It is awarded to non-infantry soldiers who have actually engaged an enemy force in combat, and worn on the left breast. Since it would be nearly impossible for a foreign general to earn a CAB legitimately, the costume department most likely simply picked out a random military badge.

Q
Was Bruce Willis also working on Unpaid system?
A
Bruce Willis did this cameo entirely on friendship basis. Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis are very good friends and they own Planet Hollywood.
Q
Did Stallone create an Extended Cut?
A
Yes, during its theatrical run Stallone announced via Twitter that he was working on an Extended Cut of his movie, like he did with Rambo. So far this Extended Cut has only been available for a limited number of customers of the Video On Demand services, such as AT&T U-Verse, Comcast or EpixHD in the United States but will be released in late 2011 on Blu-ray. In total the Extended Cut is approx. 10 minutes longer than the well-known Theatrical Version and features more than 200 changes and especially several characters got more screen time and their actions are now a bit more credible. Especially Dolph Lundgren's character profits from these changes and in conclusion one can say that the Extended Cut is probably a better version than the Theatrical Version and a must for all fans of this movie. A very detailed comparison, split in two parts, between both cuts with pictures can be found here (part 1) and here (part 2).
Q
What plane do the Expendables fly?
A
The Expendables fly a Grumman HU-16 Albatross. It has a black paint job with the Expendables logo, a black hawk on a globe, and the name Global Wildlife Conservancy written on it.
