Trivia
John Wayne later blamed the poor critical response to the movie on co-star Vera Ralston.

John Wayne was so pleased with the chemistry between himself and Oliver Hardy that he offered Hardy the role of "permanent comic sidekick" in subsequent movies. By the time this picture was released, Stan Laurel had recovered from illness and was able to return to the Laurel & Hardy team, so Hardy (graciously, of course) declined Wayne's offer.

During the 23 year period where Oliver Hardy made comedies with Stan Laurel, this was one of only two movies in which he acted without his famous comedy partner.

Goofs
During the party with music in the Mansion near the end of the film, it is obvious when watching all the violins being played that John Wayne and Oliver Hardy do not know how to play the violins; they aren't even close to pretending to play the instrument.

When the soldiers are starting their march from Mobile, Alabama, to their home in Kentucky, they sing, "Only 800 miles more to go". In reality, the distance from Mobile to Kentucky is only about 400 miles.
