Michel Gondry was initially set to direct the film for Universal Pictures back in 1997, for what was to be his directorial debut. The script was written by Edward Neumeier and featured a villain who ate human hearts. Gondry initially wanted Vince Vaughn for the lead, but the parts of Britt and Kato were offered to Mark Wahlberg and Jason Scott Lee.

Kato says he's from Shanghai, to which Britt replies that he loves Japan. Kato was originally Japanese in the radio series from 1936 until 1939. Due to world events, the character's nationality was changed briefly to Korean before settling on Filipino for nearly all of the 1940s. In the 1960s, Chinese-American athlete Bruce Lee's definitive portrayal fixed the public perception of Kato as Chinese for The Green Hornet (1966), although subsequent versions in other media such as comic books have sometimes reverted to the original Japanese origin.

Goofs
When the Black Beauty is being chased by the police, Kato uses the car's weapons to slice open the police car body and front left tire, causing it to crash. However, when the police car flips and the front left tire is easily seen in front of the camera, the tire is intact.

When Chudnofsky is about to shoot Kato at point blank range his gas mask is raised off his face resting on his forehead. An instant later as he flies backwards it is covering his face. An instant later as he stands it is gone completely.

On the roof when Chudnofsky is telling Popeye about his new name "Bloodnofsky," there is a tree directly behind Popeye. When the camera position changes, the tree disappears, and then reappears later, several time.

Q
Is this a comedy?
A
It's best to let Rogen himself speak about this subject. From WorstPreviews.com: Seth Rogen, writer and co-star of the upcoming The Green Hornet, told Sci Fi Wire that the film will possess elements of both comedy and action. "To me, the two aren't mutually exclusive," said Rogen. "You can have a big action epic with a lot of funny parts." Green Hornet is a big-screen adaptation of the superhero franchise, which was adapted as a popular 1960s television series and was inspired by the original radio program created in the 1930s. Hornet follows the adventures of Britt Reid, a bored playboy who inherits his father's crusading newspaper, the Daily Sentinel. By night he is a masked hero, fighting crime with his sidekick, Kato, who has incredible martial-arts skills. Rogen, whose film projects to date have been primarily comedic in nature, said that the forthcoming update will evoke other action films that feature an undercurrent of humor. "I've seen the early 'Indiana Jones' movies in theaters, and they kill," Rogen said. "There's laughs throughout the whole thing, and it doesn't feel like a comedy per se. It just feels like something that's trying to solicit reactions from the audience, and we think of movies like 'True Lies' and stuff like that. That's more kind of what we're going for with this." Director Michel Gondry also has said this about the film's tone: "It's an action movie with some comedy in it. The action will be fast and furious and the comedy will come from the dynamic between Kato and Britt Reid."
