It is the fourth adaptation of Finney's novel, preceded by Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), and Body Snatchers (1993). The screenplay was written by Dave Kajganich with additional rewrites by American screenwriting team Lana and Andy Wachowski.
