Director Paul Mayeda Berges cast Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for the role of Tilo while she was working on Bride & Prejudice (2004). He gave her the script to read and was interested in the part of Tilo, and so Paul cast her.
During the scene when Doug tells Tilo about his relationship to his mother, the glass of lemon soda that she gives him is full, then when he sets it down it's empty. Then he raises it again to his mouth, and it's full again.
Towards the end, Doug hits red chili peppers with his shoulder. The chili start turning. In the next shot they are still, and in the following one they are swinging.
When Tilo makes "paan" for Kwesi, she is shown putting some betel nuts and finally a cardamom in the paan. However, upon revelation, a clove is seen in the paan which was never there before.
Tilo: I closed my eyes and willed my breath to slow, my conscious mind to fold itself inward. I could feel heat pulsing from my daughter's head, her frantic thoughts whirling like broken glass. I loosened my hold on my body and dropped into that whirlpool.
