Mary Harron:
[masochistic man]
In "I Shot Andy Warhol," Valerie Solanas encounters a man who wants her to stomp all over his chest. In "The Notorious Bettie Page," Bettie Page meets a man at a party who asks her if she likes stomping on men. The two men say almost the exact same things, word for word.
Martin Scorsese and Liv Tyler had been developing a competing project, but then Scorsese was given the green-light for The Aviator (2004), and he backed out. Liv Tyler also subsequently left.
Hugh M. Hefner, a good friend of Bettie's, held a private screening of this movie for Bettie Page and a small group of friends. Bettie reportedly liked the movie and remarked that 'Gretchen Moll' was much prettier than she was. Her only complaint was the films title, saying "I was NEVER notorious!"
At Bettie's first Klaw photo shoot (in the early 1950s), the record Paula plays for Bettie to dance to is Esquivel's "Mucha Muchacha," recorded in 1961.
During the scene towards the beginning of movie where Bettie Page is talking to a security guard while waiting in the lobby of the courthouse a boom mic can be seen.
The scene is based on an actual event, although in reality it happened in New York and not in Tennessee. Page said that she lied to the men, claiming that she was having her period so they wouldn't want to have sex with her. She was then forced to perform oral sex on the men.
