In the DVD commentary, William Dear mentions (at 06:45) "some of this footage is from a Mexico unit that had shot prior to our shooting and that's a whole other story about the struggle this movie had." At 11:53 in the commentary Dear adds "There was a unit that shot, prior to our shooting, in Mexico. I tried to use as much footage as I could from their shoot, but we had a lot of casting changes once that little shoot had folded." At 26:55 Dear mentions they had lost the boy originally cast as the catcher, Norberto, and were so close to shooting they could only use a boy who could already play baseball, when they found Ryan Ochoa who had the right look, acting ability, and could hit, pitch, and catch baseball despite being more than a year younger than the other principal boys.
