Rumour has it that Dario Argento's original cut of the film ran almost an hour longer and that the version which was finally released, has been heavily re-cut and changed by the producers to assure the film's appeal to wider audiences.
Cinematographer Ronnie Taylor has worked in three other adaptations of Gaston Leroux's novel "The Phantom of the Opera". He was cinematographer in Dario Argento's previous Opera (1987) as well as camera operator in Brian DePalma's Phantom of the Paradise (1974). He also did the cinematography for Popcorn (1991), which is considered to have been inspired by the novel.

Two versions of Dario Argento's succeeded and bloody version of "Phantom of the Opera" were released in the US: a shortened R-Rated Version and the Uncut Unrated Version. Besides some violent footage, the R-Rated Version lacks a few sex scenes. Nevertheless the R-Rated Version still contains some hardness.
