Trivia
The Prince of Tides novel was recommended to Barbra Streisand by her then-boyfriend Don Johnson, who was a fan of the novel. She enjoyed it and planned to make it into a film, with Johnson in the Tom Wingo part. However by the time the film was in production, their romantic relationship had ended, which meant that Johnson was no longer attached to the role.

Quotes
Tom Wingo: Let's face it, Lowenstein. Women are more devious than men. You're great at hiding things. You keep secrets. You smile when you lie. You expect a man to be a tower of strength. When he's got a few weaknesses and insecurities, what do you do? You turn around, and goddamn it, you betray him!

Tom Wingo: [narrating] From my mother I inherited a love of language and an appreciation of nature. She could turn a walk around the island into a voyage of purest discovery. As a child, I thought she was the most extraordinary woman on earth. I wasn't the first son to be wrong about his mother.

Tom Wingo: I'm sick of my sister's attraction to razor blades - and I'm sick of shrinks who can't do a fucking thing to help her.

A
Southern-born English teacher and football coach Tom Wingo (Nick Nolte) is forced to leave his family behind in South Carolina and travel to New York City when his twin sister Savannah (Melinda Dillon) attempts suicide. Her psychiatrist, Dr Susan Lowenstein (Barbra Streisand), requests Tom's help in serving as Savannah's childhood 'memory' when she is unable to recall her own. Along the way to helping Savannah, Tom finds his own painful memories of growing up in a dysfunctional family also need work. When Susan begins to open up and talk about her painful marriage to a famous concert violinist, the two of them fall in love, providing the therapy they both need to find their way back to their own lives.
