The setting of the movie is not a real place, no three-sided pyramids exist.

Fire obviously scares the pyramid monsters away (as it does most living creatures); both times during this adventure when the red flares were lit, the creatures immediately shied away. Why, then, does this "professional" group of scientists, archaeologists, etc., not think to simply build some fires to block off passageways and/or fashion some hand held torches to keep the beasties away from them?

Immediately after being impaled in the spike pit, Sunni is attacked by a large number of cat creatures who are seen graphically biting her and tearing out chunks of flesh from her face, arms, and legs. When her comrades examine her moments later, however, her face, arms, and legs are suddenly free from any bite wounds.

When Sunni falls into the spike pit, her comrades light a red flare and throw it near her body to scare the cat creatures away. Moments later, though, when they finally reach her and kneel down next to her, the brightly burning flare is nowhere to be seen.
