Though it follows the general plot rather closely, there are a number of differences between this adaptation and the original novel by Alistair MacLean. Notably among them, in the novel the action is set in the UK, Station Three is called the Mordon Microbiological Research Establishment, George Maharis' character is called Pierre Cavell and Anne Francis' character is called Mary and is actually married to George Maharis' character.

In the scene in the jazz club where Lee Barrett is introduced, the waitress that tells him he has a phone call is played by Lee Remick in an uncredited cameo role.

Goofs

At the climax, some long shots of the helicopter show the right side's door missing before the fight between Barrett and the pilot knocks it off.

When Barret first enters the vault, he dials top combination lock. The door has two locks requiring a second combination (held by another person) to open. This is common in high security, i.e. 'No-Lone' zones to prevent one person from accessing the area by themselves.

What is 'The Satan Bug' about?

When the head researcher at Station Three in Southern California goes missing and several flasks of two highly lethal viral bioweapons -- Botulinus and the Satan Bug -- are stolen, former intelligence agent Lee Barrett (George Maharis) is asked to investigate. He concludes that a lunatic is behind the theft, a conclusion that is confirmed when General Williams (Dana Andrews), having flown in from Washington to lead the investigation, receives a telegram threatening to release the viruses unless Station Three is destroyed. Unfortunately, it appears that one of the Station Three research scientists is also in on the conspiracy, so it's up to Barrett to find the conspirators as well as the flasks.

Why was Reagan murdered?

Reagan came back after everyone had supposedly left. He stumbled on either Donald in the act of stealing the flasks or Baxter in E lab. Therefore, Donald had to eliminate him.
