After a single season of good reviews but mediocre ratings, ABC offered to renew the series if producer Irwin Allen would cut his budget by one-third. He refused and the series was canceled, to be replaced in the fall of 1967 by Custer (1967).

Q
How did Doug get trapped in time?
A
He went to rescue Tony in 1912 and to get the Captain of the Titanic to devert the ship from the iceberg. The Captain threw the newspaper showing the Titanic disaster out of a porthole. Doug along with Tony were saved before the Titanic sank and Doug wore his 1912 suit for the rest of the series.
