The most prominent genus featured in the dinosaur scenes is Parasaurolophus, one of the Hadrosaur "duckbills".

The critic Jim Emerson got word of what Terrence Malick intended the sequence of dinosaurs to mean, by way of the visual effects supervisor in charge of that very sequence who is Michael L. Fink. Emerson describes what he learned from Fink; "The premise of the four-shot scene was to depict the birth of consciousness (what some have called the "birth of compassion")-the first moment in which a living creature made a conscious decision to choose what Michael described as "right from wrong, good from evil." Or, perhaps, a form of altruism over predatory instinct".

Goofs
The credits say that Johannes Brahms's fourth symphony, second movement is heard (in a version by Herbert von Karajan, not Arturo Toscanini as in the film), but it is the fourth movement.

When Mr. O'Brien receives the terrible news at the beginning of the movie by phone, the camera and camera operator are reflected in the handset.

The O'Briens have a fancy ceiling fan with lights attached in their lounge room; these were not available in the '50s.

Quotes
Mrs. O'Brien: [voice over] Lord, Why? Where were you? Did you know what happened? Do you care?
Mrs. O'Brien: [voice over] Nature only wants to please itself. Get others to please it too. Likes to lord it over them. To have its own way. It finds reasons to be unhappy when all the world is shining around it. And love is smiling through all things.

Father Haynes: Do you trust in God? Job too was close to the Lord.

Q
To what does the opening biblical passage refer?
A
Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?...when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of god shouted for joy? Job 38:4,7In the biblical Book of Job, Job is a successful farmer who has suddenly descended into ruin because of the devil's interference. Job questions why? God says that there are so many things Job does not know about how this world was formed or how nature works, since Job wasn't there at the beginning. The gist is that, as mere humans, we cannot know a Creator's plan for the world.
Q
How much sex, violence, and profanity are in this movie?
A
For detailed information about the amounts and types of (a) sex and nudity, (b) violence and gore, (c) profanity, (d) alcohol, drugs, and smoking, and (e) frightening and intense scenes in this movie, consult the IMDb Parents Guide for this movie. The Parents Guide for The Tree of Life can be found here.
Q
Why is Mrs. O'Brien seen floating beneath a tree at one point?
A
This moment is very brief and passes without any form of explanation. It comes immediately after, and may be another part of, the scene with the airplane and her explanation that it was a graduation gift. Due to the abstract nature of the film's elements, this may simply symbolize her graceful, ethereal, forgiving nature, "floating" if it were, as if she appears or comes across this way to her sons.
