Trivia
The aircraft shown carrying the President to Connecticut is an actual VC-137 (Boeing 707) Presidential aircraft used by President John F. Kennedy. The 707 shown wasn't in service until a month after the Cuban crisis, though. At the time another 707 with a different color scheme was used.

In the early briefing scene where Arthur Lundahl, director of the CIA's National Photographic Interpretation Center, shows a map of the missiles' range, the town of Oxford, Miss., is one of the targets. All other targets were major US cities. This was not an error. It's not clear whether the joke started with the Kennedys or the CIA, but in any case President John F. Kennedy was still smarting from the previous month's riots in Oxford, which put him at cross-purposes with a recalcitrant segregationist Gov. Ross Barnett of Mississippi and some US army generals -- notably Gen. Edwin Walker -- whose hesitation to dispatch troops to northern Mississippi bordered on insubordination. Kennedy was said to have quipped "Can they hit Oxford?" when told about the missiles.

Real members of the Kennedy and O'Donnell families appear in the film. Kevin P. O'Donnell, Kenneth P. O'Donnell's oldest son, appears as the man who first spots the missiles in the U2 photographs. 'David O'Donnell', Kenny's grandson, plays 'Bruce Wilhemy', the younger of the two U2 pilots. Christopher Lawford, who played Cmdr. Ecker, is the nephew of John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy.

During a scene after American Navy planes have flown over Cuba and landed, an Oshkosh R-11 Fuel truck is seen briefly refueling the aircraft. The Oshkosh R-11 wasn't introduced until 1989 and even then it was developed for use in the U.S. Air Force.

After Kennedy leaks the Lippman column to the press, and the representative from Russia is on the television expressing his concern, Kennedy struggles with his tie, he leaves it untied and both tips of his tie are at his waist level, a moment after one tip is at his chest level, and after that both tips are at his waist level again.

Kenny O'Donnell: [to President Kennedy] You know back when we were in the wards, that day Bobby made me come down and meet you, I didn' t get you at first. I thought you were lucky. Your father had a lot of money, you were skinny, girls loved you. I thought I could beat you and Bobby up together. But he just kept going on and on about you. I thought it was because he was your brother. But I was wrong.

Q
Why are portions of the film in black and white?
A
Director Roger Donaldson wanted to create a historical feel to the film reminiscent of the famous black and white photographs of the Kennedys that appeared in Life Magazine.
Q
How accurate is the film?
A
Roger Donaldson maintains that meticulous attention to historical accuracy was paid for the film. However, several members of the Kennedy administration who were still living at the time the film was released took exception with the depiction of Kenny O'Donnell's role during the crisis. In a PBS interview, Robert McNamara stated that O'Donnell had no role in the crisis, and that it was in fact Ted Sorensen who pulled the administration together.
