The role of the fictional legendary film producer Bruno Sánchez Félix was conceived from the beginning to be played by some bigger-than-life actor or iconic figure of the film industry. An invitation was extended to legendary real-life producer Guillermo Calderón (I), uncle of Volando bajo's editor Viviana García-Besné, but it was not possible for him due to age concerns. Instead, he gave permission to use footage of his produced-by film La venganza de la llorona (1974) in an important childhood scene of Volando bajo. And the role of Bruno Sánchez Félix ended being incarnated by another real-life legend, Javier López (I) better known for many generations as "Chabelo".

Hailed as The Mexican "This Is Spinal Tap", but also praised for its nostalgic and intimate tone that goes beyond the mere jokes and closer to the heart, as a sort of "Cinema Paradiso" of the Mexican B-Movies and Mexican Popular Music during the 70's and 80's.

A detailed timeline of the two lead character's music and cinema careers, as a team and in solitary, was created by Francisco Payó González and Beto Gómez in order to incorporate and melt the "real legend" of Los Jilgueros de Rosarito whitin the decades that the movie's story take place.
