Trivia
In the intervening years since the movie, the LA Metro has indeed been working towards extending subway service to Beverly Hills, albeit on its Purple Line rather than its Red Line as depicted. One of the proposed stops is at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, where they dammed the lava flow along the Miracle Mile.

An elaborate miniaturized portion of the doomed city, which was destroyed as the lava flowed, was constructed inside hangar #1 at the San Bernardino International Airport.

The male lead was originally offered to Ed Harris and Bill Pullman.

Goofs
An overhead shot of Wilshire Boulevard shows lights on in the background, even though the city has no power.

Helicopters fly around constantly, but the volcanic ash would've clogged the engines. No helicopters should be in the air.

During the movie the transit employee sinks into lava after saving the life of the unconscious train operator. Simply put, basaltic lava (~3g/cm^3) is more dense than humans (~1g/cm^3). So if a person where to fall onto lava they would not be able to sink into it, instead they would rest on top and get very badly burned by the 900+ degrees Celsius lava.

Quotes
Roark: I gave that woman my child, she gave me this card.

Dr. Jaye Calder: We have put the kids in the mall. The Hard Rock I think.

Amy: Roark, Roark. There's lava in the red line. This just came through on the radio. The lava had overtaken a subway train in Macarthur park and completely destroyed it.
