When John Candy attempts to destroy the bridge he says "What have I done?". This is the same line Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness) says before the bridge is destroyed in _Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)_.
Tom Hanks based his performance as and characterization of Lawrence Bourne the Third on the actor who played his character's father Lawrence Bourne, Jr, actor George Plimpton. Hanks payed much attention to Plimpton and listened to his diction very astutely. Hanks was able to mimic his vocalizations by mimicking certain words and putting stress on certain vowels. Hanks once said: "I tried to cull from him that air, not of superiority, but of a kind of confidence he exudes. He has one of the most distinctive voices ever. It was the most fun I've ever had as an actor. As soon as I put on that double- breasted white tuxedo, I was in character. It was a situation of the clothes making the man. Lawrence is a guy who refuses to take life on anything but his own terms. He is consistent to the end".
When Bootsy Winder is in Lawrence's room on the day of graduation, she announces that she has to leave immediately because she is giving the valedictorian speech that morning at Smith College. However, Smith College is a state-and-a-half away from Yale.
Early in the movie, after Lawrence boards the airliner and the cabin door is shut, one of the thugs chasing him tries to board the plane by jumping from the stairway. When he hits the side of the plane, the cabin door flexes and moves, revealing it to be a fake door.
Tom Tuttle: Let's face it: you're afraid and you have a damn good reason to be. Albert Spear once said, "Fear is victory's fuel!" Oh, you spend a few years with me, pal, and we are going to turn that fear into high octane.
