Trivia
Yul Brynner's character is known as The Gunslinger. Interestingly, the word "gunslinger" was only created in the 1950s and has no connection to the old West.

When the Gunslinger robot is splashed in the face with acid, Yul Brynner's face was coated with an oil-based makeup mixed with ground Alka-Seltzer. A splash of water then produced the fizzing effect.

The first use of computer digitized images as part of a feature film (not merely monitor graphics) was the Gunslinger's point of view in Westworld. After the process was finally developed enough to produce satisfactory results, it took a mere eight hours to produce each ten seconds of Gunslinger's pixellated POV.

Goofs
When Peter blows up the jail wall to escape, you can see the intact part of the wall undulate. Real brick and mortar are not flexible and would not behave in that manner.

In the last scene of the film, the gunslinger rises from the floor for the final time, and turns to reveal that its face-plate has fallen off. But the faceplate, clearly visible on the floor when the robot turns, wasn't there seconds before when the robot pushed itself up.

In the final scene in the mediaeval throne room, the position of the queen and the knight on their seats changes from shot to shot, and the knight's hand moves from palm up to palm down.

Q
Why did the scientist/mechanic decide to give the gunslinger infrared vision and enhanced hearing capabilities?
A
It could have been a prototype test for future models.Or the scientist/mechanic could have been one of the machines that was self-aware and built the robots as was mentioned by the scientists.
