Actress Daisy Donovan, who also appeared in the film, contributed some additional dialogue to the screenplay, mainly consisting of contemporary phrases or sayings. She said one of the ways she did this was to go to the library and listen to teenagers talking to their friends whilst revising their A levels.
In one scene Poppy (Emma Roberts) asks: What is this place? Hogwarts? and then the movie cuts to a scene with Matron (Shirley Henderson) who Played Moaning Myrtle in the Harry Potter movies.
Harriet dresses as Keira Knightley from in her role as Elizabeth Bennet from Joe Wright's Pride & Prejudice (2005). The music that Mr. Nellist plays is "Dawn" written by Dario Marianelli which features in the film. Pictures from the film are seen as Harriet designs her costume in her bedroom before the "coffee aging" is poured on Poppy (Emma Roberts).
At the beginning of the film, Poppy jumps into the ocean yet when she emerges a few seconds later, she is almost completely dry. Even in Malibu sun this isn't possible. Also Poppy is very concerned when her clothes get wet at the boarding school but this does not bother her when she jumps into the ocean.
When Molly is Making her pb and j sandwich, she has a blue top with a pony on it. But when we see her again in the upstairs landing she is wearing a blue shirt.
When Poppy arrives at Abbey Mount she's talking to Kate and says "I choose my friends, and FYI you don't make the cut." Then Kate replies with "I'm sure that comment would be a lot worse if I knew what FYI meant." But as they're walking to lunch Kate is telling Poppy the rules and she clearly says FYI.
