Trivia
After purchasing the rights to the book the film was based on, Lucille Ball became very close to the Beardsley's and even went as far as to treat the whole family to a vacation at Disneyland.

Lucille Ball co-produced the film under her company, Desilu Productions. When the film became a surprise smash hit grossing over $17 million on a $2.5 million investment, she became furious about it. She hadn't anticipated the film's huge box-office success and failed to provide a tax shelter for her personal profits, resulting in most of her share going in taxes.

Tim Matheson and Jennifer Leak (who played the eldest children) married the year the film was released.

Goofs
When Frank decides to buy Helen a gift to commemorate their first and last date she picks a stature of Kwan Yin. The clerk says the Kwan Yin means "joyous symbol of fertility" (at 34:32 on the DVD). Kwan Yin actually means "Observing the Sounds of the World" and is primarily considered the Goddess of Mercy, Love and Compassion. Her fertility aspects are minor and would not be mentioned by a Chinese person.

Helen learns she is pregnant on Christmas morning. But seven months later (a fact established by July postmarks on several envelopes while her husband is away at sea at 93:24 on the DVD) she displays no physical signs that she is less than two months away from giving birth.

Frank decides to call Helen, so he looks her number up in the white pages. But Helen had just moved to the city recently, so her number shouldn't be in the phone book yet.

Quotes
Helen North: Sister, I, uh, I understand your legal problem, but you must try to understand mine. You see, I'm trying to bring two families together, and this is the first sign that I may be succeeding. So I really would appreciate it if you'd let Phillip sign his name Beardsley.

Colleen North: Larry says he'll never speak to me again unless I grow up. He says that I'm being ridiculous and I don't love him, but I do love him. Am I being ridiculous?

Frank Beardsley: We've decided to use our company manners. Helen, the boys have something to say to you.
