AAfter the Graces kill all the goblins with their tomato sauce bombs, there comes a knocking on the door. Richard enters and asks what's going on. Jared shows him the book but, as Richard reaches for it, Jared pulls it back. Knowing that Mulgarath has the power to shapeshift, Jared refuses to let him see the book until his father tells him what he promised to say the next time they saw each other, the answer to which Jared already knows. 'I just wanted to tell you that I love you,' says Richard. 'Wrong answer!' replies Jared as he stabs 'Richard', who transforms into Mulgarath and chases after him and the book. When Jared hides in the dumbwaiter, Mulgarath changes into a snake and pursues him up the shaft. Jared climbs out on the roof and throws the book down onto the lawn, so Mulgarath transforms into a raven and flies down to catch it. Just as the Mulgarath-raven is about to fly off with the book, Hogsqueal gobbles him up. Some days later, while Aunt Lucy is visiting the Graces, her father comes walking out of the trees. He explains that, because the book was saved, the sylphs allowed him to come and see her but that he cannot stay. Lucy asks only that he take her with him. In the final scene, they take each others' hands, Lucy transforms into the 6-year old child Arthur left behind, and they walk off together into the land of magic while the Grace's go back into their house.
